How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes in Your Yard

If your yard has been hard to use this season, mosquitoes are probably breeding somewhere close by.

Most homeowners have already tried something (citronella, a spray from the hardware store) and found that the relief doesn't last. Here's why that happens, what you can do to reduce breeding conditions yourself, and when professional control is worth bringing in.

Start With Standing Water

Mosquitoes breed fast and don't need much to do it. A clogged gutter, a flowerpot saucer, a tarp that collected rain last week: any of these can support a full breeding cycle in under two weeks.

Walk the property after a rain and flag anything holding water that hasn't drained within a couple of days. The usual places to check:

  • Gutters, especially if they're backed up with debris
  • Birdbaths that don't get refreshed regularly
  • Low spots in the lawn where water pools and sits
  • Buckets, toys, or equipment left outside

Clearing these doesn't end a mosquito problem, but it removes fuel. If standing water keeps accumulating somewhere you can't fix (a drainage issue, a low corner of the yard), that's worth noting when you call us.

Cut Down Resting Habitat

Adult mosquitoes spend most of the day resting in shade: dense shrubs, tall grass, overgrown groundcover, anywhere that stays cool and humid. Trimming back vegetation and keeping the lawn mowed reduces the shelter that lets populations build between treatments. Shaded areas along fence lines and under decks tend to be the worst spots.

This matters more than people expect. A property with heavy resting habitat will see faster mosquito rebound even after treatment, because there's simply more cover for survivors to hide in.

Why Most DIY Efforts Don't Last

Consumer sprays and candles can reduce biting in the immediate moment, but the effect fades quickly. Mosquitoes recolonize from surrounding areas, and most store-bought products don't reach the resting and breeding sites where populations actually sustain themselves.

The fix isn't necessarily professional control but rather consistent professional control. Some programs underdeliver not because barrier treatment doesn't work, but because the treatment schedule is too infrequent. A four-week gap between visits gives mosquito populations enough time to recover. If you've used a professional service before and felt like it didn't do much, that's often why. We go deeper into what separates effective mosquito control from programs that fall short.

What a Good Program Actually Looks Like

Meaningful, lasting mosquito reduction generally requires two things working together.

Barrier treatment, applied consistently

A barrier treatment targets the shrubs and shaded areas where mosquitoes rest. Applied every two weeks during the season, it keeps adult populations from rebuilding between visits. The frequency is what makes it work. Employ a few months' interval, and you're giving populations time to recover.

Mosquito traps for the breeding cycle

Barrier spray handles the adults already on your property. It doesn't reach mosquitoes breeding in neighboring areas or spots that the spray can't access. Our traps program attracts egg-laying mosquitoes (particularly Asian tiger mosquitoes, which bite during the day and are harder to control) and uses a low-toxicity larvicide that disrupts reproduction beyond your property line. The combination addresses the problem at multiple points in the life cycle, which is why results tend to hold better than barrier spray alone.

How We Approach It

We run mosquito service every two weeks, March through November. Every visit includes barrier treatment. In2Care traps are serviced every four weeks and maintained, cleaned, and stored in winter, with no installation fees. Our services are billed monthly with no long-term contracts, and you can cancel anytime in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this work if my neighbors don't treat their yard?

Yes. Neighboring properties can contribute to mosquito pressure, but our program's In2Care traps help disrupt breeding activity originating beyond your fence line. Meaningful reduction is achievable even without neighbor participation.

How long before I notice a difference?

Most homeowners see a reduction after the first couple of visits. Results build progressively as our program works through both adult populations and the breeding cycle.

Are the products kid- and pet-friendly?

Yes. We use lower-toxicity active ingredients that carry the same EPA signal-word tier as many common household cleaners. Our products are also pollinator-friendly.

Is there a contract?

No. Our service runs month to month. Cancel anytime with written notice.

What's the difference between barrier spray and In2Care traps?

Barrier spray targets adult mosquitoes resting on your property. Our In2Care traps disrupt the breeding cycle, including activity from mosquitoes that originate outside your yard. Together, they provide more complete control than either does on its own.

Do you offer other outdoor pest control services?

Yes. In addition to mosquito control, we offer exterior pest control for homeowners dealing with other unwanted visitors in their outdoor spaces.
